Biocontrol of Citrus green mould and postharvest quality parameters

چکیده
The potential for using Pichia guilliermondii BCC 5389 or Bacillus subtilis ABS-S14 by themselves or in combination for the control Penicillium digitatum in citrus, and their effects on postharvest quality of fruit was investigated. The percentage of disease with the combined antagonists was completely inhibited. Rapid colonization of P. guilliermondii was observed in the wounds during the first day to 6 days at 25oC, whereas B. subtilis, increased marginally over 3 days. The populations then stabilized for the remaining incubation period. The percentage of spore germination of P. digitatum incubated with all treatments was inhibited by 100%. At concentrations of the combined antagonists of 1x108 CFU/mL, the incidence of green mould was reduced to 0% compared with the pathogen control itself (92.93%) after 5 days of incubation at 25oC. The combination did not impair any of the quality parameters of fruit following incubation at 25oC for 7 days.

Biological control of postharvest diseases of fruits.
Losses from postharvest fruit diseases range from 1 to 20 percent in the United States, depending on the commodity. The application of fungicides to fruits after harvest to reduce decay has been increasingly curtailed by the development of pathogen resistance to many key fungicides, the lack of replacement fungicides, negative public perception regarding the safety of pesticides and consequent ...
متن کاملNative Killer Yeasts as Biocontrol Agents of Postharvest Fungal Diseases in Lemons
Economic losses caused by postharvest diseases represent one of the main problems of the citrus industry worldwide. The major diseases affecting citrus are the "green mold" and "blue mold", caused by Penicillium digitatum and P. italicum, respectively. To control them, synthetic fungicides are the most commonly used method. However, often the emergence of resistant strains occurs and their use ...
متن کاملEffect of Harvest Time, Non-Toxic Treatments and Storage Temperature on Postharvest Life of Mexican Lime (Citrus aurantifolia L.)
In order to evaluate the effect of harvesting time, storage temperature and non-toxic treatments of Putrescine (Pu), salicylic acid (SA) and thyme and cloves essential oils (TEO and CEO) on qualitative and quantitative characteristics of Mexican lime fruit, a factorial completely randomized design experiment was performed. This experiment was conducted with three storage temperature levels incl...

The application of the biocontrol agent Pantoea agglomerans EPS125 to unwounded fruits was practically ineffective for control of postharvest blue mould caused by Penicillium expansum when the treatment and subsequent wounding and pathogen inoculation were separated by periods of unfavourable conditions. This was due to a rapid decrease in viability of the alocthonous introduced biocontrol agen...
متن کاملEffect of water activity and temperature on competing abilities of common postharvest citrus fungi.
The effect of temperature (4-30 degrees C) and water activity (a(w), 0.995-0.90) on the 'in vitro' interactions between Penicillium digitatum, Penicillium italicum and Geotrichum candidum were evaluated. The effect of temperature on growth of green and blue mould decays and their interactions on wounded oranges was also studied. The major competing abilities were observed at optimal conditions ...
